May 4 - World Vision Global 6K Walk for Water
On Saturday, May 4 some local citizens will set out on a walk through the Iowa countryside. But their minds will be focused on other people, walking thousands of miles away - just to get a drink of water. Members of the Bertram UM Church are encouraging others to join them for the World Vision Global 6K for Water. The fundraiser walkers will stride the Sac and Fox Trail near the Indian Creek Nature Center beginning at 9 AM. Plans call for an out-and-back route west from the "barn parking lot" on Otis Road SE.

The Bertram group's walk is part of a world-wide effort to raise funds and awareness of the need for safe, accessible drinking water around the globe. In addition to participants from Bertram, there are 6K sites in more than 20 countries, including Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Japan, Mexico, South Korea, Spain, Turkey, the U.K. and throughout the United States.

Bertram Pastor Jen Zoller says the walk distance itself carries a message. "Six kilometers is also about 3.7 miles. That is the average distance people - usually women and girls - walk to fetch water for their families and homes in the developing world," Zoller said. "Often, that walk is dangerous. Children miss school, and the water they get is often dirty."

Every $50 registrations in the Global 6K for Water provides clean water to one person. Bertram participants hope to improve water supplies for two dozen or more people with their pledges. The Bertram group welcomes interested neighbors and other church groups to join them in the May 4 walk. More information is available from Jen Zoller at zollerjen@gmail.com.
